You have to hand it to the Canadians - they have inventive minds!  A new study from a Hospital in Toronto suggests that Chili Peppers may actually CURE diabetes.  This is remarkable news.

Here is a link to the excellent blog, Diabetes Mine, and its report.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Dr. Hans Michael Dosch, an immunologist at the hospital and a leader of the studies. "In my career, this is unique."

Here is the newspaper report of the breakthrough.

Studies on the beneficial effects of cinnamon on blood sugar have been popping up over the past few years.  Just making a tea of the ground spice seems to be helpful.

However, this study suggests that the most efficient method in the long run - not everyone can tolerate the same tea every day, and many do not like the taste - is the aqueous (water soluble) extract called Cinnulin PF.

It has frequently been demonstrated that there is a connection between hormonal cancers in women, and obesity.  This is because estrogen is stored in fat cells.

This study goes a step further and uncovers a link between insulin resistance (possible even in women of normal weight ) and an increase factor of 20 in endometrial cancer

The January of Diabetes Care, ( vol 28: pp 96-101.) carries a study by Dr. Sima which evaluated two studies involving over 1200 patients  with diabetic neuropathy.  Analysis indicated significant improvement, both at the 6 month and 1 year mark using 1000 mgs of Acetyl-L-Carnitine.

People who had been diagnosed with diabetes for the shortest length of time not only experienced the highest level of pain relief, but also showed improvement in  nerve structure and reactions.

The researchers said the results suggested that optimal results may be obtained by starting this therapy as early as possible in the course of the disease.

View Article  Diabetes and Deafness

While deafness often comes on gradually, sometimes the onset is very sudden. It's both distressing and puzzling when this happens because there may not be an obvious cause. However, Japanese researchers have now uncovered a previously unknown link between sudden deafness and type 2 diabetes.

In a group of 148 patients with sudden-onset deafness in one ear, 16 per cent were shown, by a battery of tests, to have type 2 diabetes. They also tended to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and worse hearing than the non-diabetics in the study group. What is more, their blood sugar was higher than that in diabetics who had not suffered sudden hearing loss. These finding do suggest a causal link between diabetes and sudden hearing loss. So if you suddenly go deaf in one ear, do have the doctor investigate the possibility of diabetes and get your blood sugar checked out.

View Article  Cinnamon & Diabetes

When the studies on Cinnamon began to be much  talked about I wondered how long it would be before someone suggested cinnamon rolls might be beneficial.  Well, now Johns Hopkins is endorsing the research, and while this isn't quite cinnamon rolls, news outlets said the following:

"If you have type 2 diabetes, you may want to sprinkle cinnamon on your cappuccino."

According to the Johns Hopkins University newsletter Health After 50, a recent study found that when people with diabetes consumed between 1 and 3 grams of cinnamon daily, their blood glucose, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol levels dropped significantly.

Cinnamon extracts appear to enhance the efficiency of insulin and to help fat cells recognize and respond to the hormone.

I can't resist pointing out that I have been mentioning Cinnamon and its beneficial effect on  Diabetes for many years .

Now, the US Government itself is becoming convinced of the value of the spice, though their studies have suggested that taking the necessary quantities of the actual spice may expose one to an excess of some toxic compounds it contain.  Their studies showed that an extract was necessary.

So far, so good: but does the Government have a right to apply for a patent on a natural substance?   Hmmm!

View Article  Obesity and health

I was intrigued by this article on our attitudes to fat people:  certainly culture has a great deal to do with it, but I am skeptical of the claims that fat and health are not connected:  there is too much support for the connection between blood sugar and obesity, for example, to ignore - as well as the research connecting obesity and certain cancers.

In fact, what this article does not address is the growing resentment on the part of those people who take the time and trouble to maintain their health, against those whom they perceive as too lazy and ignorant to do so and who are therefore are consuming millions in tax dollars  through the Health System.

What do you think?
