Most children want A's - but it looks as though D's is what they need. I think we all know that diabetes is becoming a major childhood health problem. New research is suggesting that Vitamin D3 may be protective. I tell you , Grandma with her Cod Liver Oil REALLY knew best!!

You have to hand it to the Canadians - they have inventive minds! A new study from a Hospital in Toronto suggests that Chili Peppers may actually CURE diabetes. This is remarkable news. Here is a link to the excellent blog, Diabetes Mine, and its report. "I've never seen anything like it," said Dr. Hans Michael Dosch, an immunologist at the hospital and a leader of the studies. "In my career, this is unique." Here is the newspaper report of the breakthrough. Here is a Capsaicin spray for instant entry into the blood stream Here are are capsules of Capsaicin, in a form that will not irritate even sensitive stomachs July 21, 2006

Studies on the beneficial effects of cinnamon on blood sugar have been popping up over the past few years. Just making a tea of the ground spice seems to be helpful. However, this study suggests that the most efficient method in the long run - not everyone can tolerate the same tea every day, and many do not like the taste - is the aqueous (water soluble) extract called Cinnulin PF. It has frequently been demonstrated that there is a connection between hormonal cancers in women, and obesity. This is because estrogen is stored in fat cells. This study goes a step further and uncovers a link between insulin resistance (possible even in women of normal weight ) and an increase factor of 20 in endometrial cancer July 23, 2005

The January of Diabetes Care, ( vol 28: pp 96-101.) carries a study by Dr. Sima which evaluated two studies involving over 1200 patients with diabetic neuropathy. Analysis indicated significant improvement, both at the 6 month and 1 year mark using 1000 mgs of Acetyl-L-Carnitine. People who had been diagnosed with diabetes for the shortest length of time not only experienced the highest level of pain relief, but also showed improvement in nerve structure and reactions. The researchers said the results suggested that optimal results may be obtained by starting this therapy as early as possible in the course of the disease. December 17, 2004

While deafness often comes on gradually, sometimes the onset is very sudden. It's both distressing and puzzling when this happens because there may not be an obvious cause. However, Japanese researchers have now uncovered a previously unknown link between sudden deafness and type 2 diabetes. In a group of 148 patients with sudden-onset deafness in one ear, 16 per cent were shown, by a battery of tests, to have type 2 diabetes. They also tended to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and worse hearing than the non-diabetics in the study group. What is more, their blood sugar was higher than that in diabetics who had not suffered sudden hearing loss. These finding do suggest a causal link between diabetes and sudden hearing loss. So if you suddenly go deaf in one ear, do have the doctor investigate the possibility of diabetes and get your blood sugar checked out. November 23, 2004

Meanwhile, in another part of the forest, the positive results for research on Vitamin E continues, as for Parkinson's, Alzheimner's, cardiovascular support , and now - Diabetes. This study finds that certain diabestics taking Vitamin E can cut their riskof heart attack by 55%. Notice though, that even with the good news, this reporter can't resist starting with a reference to the flawed meta-analysis!
