View Article  Heartburn - c'est dfficile!

I have been waiting for this shoe to drop.  It stands to reason you can't permanently suppress stomach acid (particularly when you consider that all too frequently this is the OPPOSITE of what actually needs to be done - see my article on Digestion here) without having to pay a price.

And here we have it:  a new, more virulent strain of a nasty bacterium called Clostridium difficile (C. diff for short) is becoming strangely common in patients who have been taking Zantac, Prilosec, Nexium, Pepcid and other heartburn medications of that ilk. Would you trade heartburn relief for diarrhea, vomiting, infection of the lining of the colon, and possibly deadly illness?

Consider instead Vitamin Research Products Cease Fire

Heartburn medications raise risk for C. Diff

Any of you who have read my article on Digestion know what I feel about the use of antacids for heartburn, often the exact OPPOSITE of what is needed to help the distress.

You will also be familiar with my warnings about the consequences to your health from long term use of the prescriptions.

Now finally comes the first crack in the facade of "universal benefit" presented by the drug companies.

Read  the first study to confirm health consequences from the long term use of antacids.

May 26th

I led an interesting life in my 20s and 30s, travelling widely in Asia and South America.  Wherever I went, I made sure that the food I ate - sometimes at road side stands - contained plenty of hot peppers and herbs.  I felt it was protective against the possibility of infections or stomach disturbances, and practically, I was right.

Now, we have actual Scientific Proof!!  Do you want Salsa with that?

Here's an interesting study that suggests the increase in IBS and Crohn's disease may be connected to the paucity of parasites in our current environment.  I call it the "Worms are Good for you" study!

More here.

This fits right in with the theory that the gut has a separate nervous system:  read my article on IBS for more.  I also wonder whether this may be why Larix (Arabinogalactans) are so helpful both for the immune system and the bowel.  And Primal Defense ( Homeostatic Soil Organisms). Beats eating worms!

View Article  Give 'em Pepper
As a young woman I led an exciting life, travelling all over the world - Asia, South and Central America, Eastern Europe.  I had a simple strategy for avoiding that universal villain, the upset stomach, even though I ate pretty indiscriminately from sources that would raise even MY eyebrows now!  And that was simply never to eat anything without an accompanying selection of hot pepper.

Even now, it is my habit to put a pinch of cayenne pepper in most of the dishes I make.

Now comes a series of studies that show the active ingredient in hot peppers, capsaicin, is successful in controlling many health problems that have their origins in inflammation.

Read about it here.  I wish I could indulge my urge to go in and fix their spelling etc, but alas!
