View Article  Preventive Medicine makes us Miserable

Assume 3 states: health,  pre-disease, and disease.

And 3 ways to address them: prevention, preventive medicine and medicine.

While no-one would disagree that practicing a healthy lifestyle and avoiding ill-health is a positive state, apparently being diagnosed with ,and treated for, a pre-disease state is less happy!

"The more people are exposed to doctors and contemporary health care, including the rhetoric of preventive care, the sicker they seem to feel."

View Article  Drugged and violent

It seems so strange to me that the epidemic of teenage violence manifesting as school/relation killings has brought out virulent attacks against the guns used to commit the crimes:  but no recriminations against the drugs that these sad malefactors were using, or the drug companies that promote their use -even in the face of  evidence that mind-altering drugs are connected with uncontrolled behaviour in children.

Gasp!  Could the drug lobby be even more influential  than the NRA?

View Article  The World Trade Organization's power over the USA

For those of you following the threat the Codex Alimentarius poses to our Supplements and Health choices, there is a little glimmer of good news:

British Judge Finds Proposed EU Ban on Supplements “Invalid”…The British health food industry won a major victory last week when a senior judge ruled that a bid by the European Union (EU) to ban hundreds of vitamins and food supplements was flawed and therefore, “invalid.” Critics of the directive, including the more than one million Britons who signed a petition opposing it, welcomed the judge's decision. The proposed ban was part of the Food Supplements Directive, approved by EU governments in 2002, which was designed to tighten controls on products in the health foods market including natural remedies, vitamin supplements and mineral plant extracts. The judge concluded the ban was unscientific and infringed basic EU principles of “legal protection, legal certainty and sound administration.”

For those of you interested in the larger picture, and how the WTO may extend its power over our Government's policies, read this Representative's lucid description.

View Article  Pain or Death

Well, that isn't quite accurate, of course.

There are other ways to control pain that do not involve popping a pill, but they require more personal commitment and discipline, and our culture has led us to believe that we are not to blame for our ills, that we cannot control them, but that there is a prescription pill available which can immediately put things right. Not!

"While Bextra has been shown to put some patients at greater risk of cardiovascular reactions, the tipping point for Health Canada was the prevalence of severe skin reactions in users of the drug, some of them causing death."  (Montreal Gazette, April 8th) One news source said that it can cause skin to come off quote "in sheets".

View Article  One in the eye for Viagra

I consider Viagra to be a very sad drug in many ways, shining, as it did, the brightest light we may ever experience on the extent of male insecurity; and making it all too clear where many of our values were askew.

However that may be, now it seens men may have to choose between seeing what they love, and loving what they see.
