There's been quite a bit in the news this week about reproductive woes, and I think it would not be an exaggeration to say it casts doubts on the future of humankind! 

The first that caught my attention was about the discrepancy in male:female birth rates.  No-one, say the experts, can figure out why this is happening - but anyone with half an eye to history knows that in nature, this is a defensive mechanism when a species is threatened.

So in the midst of all the doom-and-gloom, it's nice to have ONE positive report that duh!  Nutritional supplementation improves pregnancy rate .

It's even nicer to see the word "Dramatic" used in that context!!

Addendum:  there is now a so-called "Study" suggesting that genistein can adversely affect sperm.  I wish I could direct you to the scathing critique of that study I just read,  but wonderful www.redflagsdaily.com is a subscription site - affordable, worthwhile (indispensible, actually!) - check it out!

Back to the genistein:  what the researcher did was add isolated genistein to sperm in a petri dish, and note that something happened.  As the reviewer said - something would undoubtedly also happen if you added pickled gherkins! 

I don't know why, but we have not heard much about this study in the mainstream press .....

"In a small but startling preliminary new study, Texas researchers have found that after just three months, every one of a dozen children treated for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with the drug methylphenidate experienced a threefold increase in levels of chromosome abnormalities—occurrences associated with increased risks of cancer and other adverse health effects.

The researchers say that to their knowledge this is the first study addressing the potential chromosome-breaking effects associated with treatment of children with methylphenidate, the generic name for a group of drugs that includes Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate CD and others."

The latest frantic offering from the confectionery industry, afraid it is going to be left out of the "Fitness Boom", is electrolyte and vitamin laced Jelly Bellies.  Well, they're actually calling them "Sport Beans".  No variation on the original name would quite convey what they want us to think.

 Illinois Residents:  be aware that Governor Blagojevich is considering signing Senate Bill 102, banning DHEA in the State of Illinois.  This is outrageous!  Do they think we cannot make ANY decisions for ourselves?  Contact the Governor, and ask him to weigh the Science, and refuse to sign the bill.

This is a very comprehensive study weighing any possible benefits of HRT against the risks - and as stated above - the answer is "no"!

As a side comment, - I strongly feel the latest moves against DHEA by the Government will later translate into a ban on ANY herbs or supplements which have any action at all that might be considered hormonal.

This study has put its finger on a real problem in children's diets:  not enough fiber.  This means not enough whole foods, not enough fruits, not enough vegetables. Remember, with children you have to start young:  their eating habits are mostly formed by the time they are 2 years old.
