Weight, weight - don't tell me! Obesity and ovarian cancer
by

on Wed 30 Aug 2006 10:48 AM CDT
A new study links obesity and great height to ovarian cancer. I wish I could do something about my height - did you know that centenarians are invariably TINY? - but certainly those affected may be even more motivated now to do something about their weight.
Obesity increased the risk of dying of ovarian cancer by 25% over women of normal weight.
They also found that very tall women were more likely to die of this cancer. Women who were 5 foot 9 inches and taller were 41% more likely to die of ovarian cancer than shorter women.

McDonalds - they just don't get it!
by

If any further proof were needed to tell us that anything positive McDonalds does for health or the environment is prompted by PR and not conviction - their latest choice of a toy give away provides it.
Imagine! Having trained entire generations of children to supersize their waistlines, they are now training them to choose a vehicle that not only has no justification for its existence, but is an environmental disasted to boot.
Here is a scathing critique of the Hummer give-away, and a letter you can send to McDonald's president to tell him you are not "transported with delight"!

Skin to die for - Accutane and heart attacks
by

on Tue 22 Aug 2006 10:04 AM CDT
I have warned previously about the risks associated with the acne drug Accutane, but it seems I fell short of the facts. It's even worse than I thought back then!
A new study suggests that as well as causing defects of the brain and heart in babies if their Mothers take it while pregnant, the figures for higher triglycerides, cholesterol and liver enzymes were startling.
Law suits are also pending over the connection between Accutane and teen suicide.
What to do? Try natural approaches to the problem first - often dietary changes and certain supplements will take care of the problem.

Time out

My apologies for the delay in replying to some of your questions over the past few days - I took my two Irish Wolfhounds to a dog show. They were up against some more mature dogs, so they didn't win this time, but learned a lot! Next time!
Believe it or not, they are still considered puppies at 16 months. More growing to do.
Back now, and pretty much caught up. If I missed answering something, please forgive me, and try again.

Remembrance of Things Past - Alzheimer's and the Mediterranean Diet
by

on Mon 14 Aug 2006 10:49 AM CDT
Ah, to be lounging by the wine dark sea, eating olives and goat cheese, and drinking retsina. I remember those days well - yes, I really do: I spent many years living in that part of the world.
So perhaps it is not so strange I remember - this new study supports the theory that a Mediterranean diet protects against Alzheimer's disease.
I can't think of a better way not to get it!

Sneezy and Dopey - rhinitis and Parkinson's disease
by

on Wed 09 Aug 2006 08:50 AM CDT
Another strike against overall health from inflammatory response.
A Mayo clinic study has determined that people who have allergic rhinitis and/or nasal allergies, are THREE TIMES more likely to develop Parkinson's disease.
They theorize that it is not the nasal problems per se that account for the connection, but the inflammation set up throughout the body.
P.S. I mean "dopey" not in the sense of mental incapacity, but of being spaced out

I speak English - so arrest me!
by

on Tue 08 Aug 2006 05:07 PM CDT
I have discovered that I am a Conservative - at least, that's what I have to assume because this story really gets my goat.
This Gentleman in Colorado is being moved against by local government because he advertises that his lawn service speaks English. Not for suggesting that there is anything wrong with those who DON'T speak English, but that there he is, if someone wants a person working in their garden that they can communicate with.
Don't believe me? Read about it here!
I came across the story as I was following the debate about whether English should be the official language of the USA - I have to say, there is no doubt in my mind, if we want to avoid chaos!

Remember your Apple a day - apple juice and memory
by
vtmnldy
on Wed 02 Aug 2006 09:58 AM CDT
I juice apples daily as part of my anti-cancer regimen: I admit my motivation is based somewhat upon the fact that they taste good, but also, apples are high in antioxidants and apple pips are a source of B15. I juice my apples pips and all.
Now comes a study which shows apple juice is protective against memory loss. "We anticipate that the day may come when foods like apples, apple juice and other apple products are recommended along with the most popular Alzheimer's medications," says Thomas Shea, Ph.D., director of the UML Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research.
