View Article  Currying even more Favor - the many benefits of Turmeric

There seems to be no end to the benefits of this aromatic yellow spice!  This latest analysis looks at skin health, gene transcription, angiogenesis, apoptosis (natural cell death), inflammation and allergy.

Biological effects of curcumin and its role in cancer chemoprevention and therapy

The authors note that it is not easy to absorb turmeric supplements:  just sticking the powder in a pill is apparently not enough.  Make sure that you are getting a product that has been studied for its effect and absorbability like (Ta-ta) the one I offer here:

Curcumin C3 Complex by Sabinsa

I am reprinting a recipe from a previous report on Turmeric.  You will note it contains some fats:  there is a suggestion that Turmeric is best absorbed in the presence of Fatty Acids, which help its entry into the cells.

Here is a delicious way to add turmeric to your cooking.

Take 1 cup brown rice, and rinse it.  This is to remove some of the starch. Set it to drain.

Heat 1 tblsp ghee or coconut oil in the bottom of your rice saucepan.  Chop app. half a cup of onion.  If you have black mustard seeds, put 1 tsp in the hot oil until they begin to pop.  Add onion, and cook on medium heat until limp. Add 1/2 tblsp turmeric.  Add rice, and stir until all is coated with oil and turmeric.

Add two cups of water, and cover.  Cook over low heat for 45 minutes, turn off heat and let sit for 10 minutes more without uncovering.

View Article  Sticking it to non-stick

For many years I owned a beautiful scarlet Macaw.  My husband and I originally met when he was on tour in Panama, and this was his first gift to me.  We  have no idea how old Ambrose was when we got him (and actually, we don't really know it was a "he", since Macaws can only be sexed through a rather complicated process).  However, he lived with us for over 26 years.

I discovered on moving to the States, that bird owners generally knew NOT to use Teflon pans around these birds, since the fumes can kill them.  This gave me furiously to think, and I was not surprised when information began to came to light about the toxicity of these kinds of pans.  I had already eliminated mine from the kitchen just in case, and I urge you to consider doing the same.

I have written about this before, but was inspired to do so again when, to my surprise, I came across a recipe in Vegetarian Times which began: coat a non stick pan with oil ...

The convenience isn't worth it, believe me.  A thin coating of some healthy oil on a normal saucepan will fulfill much the same purpose without the dangers.

View Article  Let's play Make-believe - the fraud of ADD/ADHD

For all of us who are bemused by the explosion of "brain disease" among our children, this article by the Health Ranger is a must-read.  Quite apart from that, if you are not already familiar with his website, I am proud to be the one who introduces you to it. Tell him the Vitamin Lady sent you!

Neurologist Dr. Fred Baughman talks about the fraud of ADHD and the poisoning of U.S. children

My article on ADD/ADHD - because there is no doubt that many children could use dietary help to control their behavior.

View Article  The nightmare of toothache - Melatonin and periodontal disease

I must say, it sounds like a most unlikely connection: a hormone connected mostly with insomnia, and the health of your mouth?   However, if you read my article on Melatonin (link below) you will be intrigued to discover, as I was, how many functions it performs in the body.

Read the research on Melatonin and periodontal disease here.

View Article  Just when you thought you'd heard it all - hormones and hearing

It now appears that having used synthetic progesterone for hormone replacement (HRT) can adversely affect women's hearing.

Perhaps we won't hear them tell us we have heart disease or breast cancer ...

There seems to be no end to the unpleasant surprises resulting from that unfortunate search for eternal sexiness, which is how HRT was originally presented to us.

View Article  Compounding NOT the Problem - Federal court rules

Some good news for a change, and a welcome glimpse of common sense from the Court system.

The FDA has lost its bid to make the compounding of prescriptions illegal, which would have been a blow for those using body identical hormones, and for the increasing number of MS (and cancer) patients benefiting from something called low dose Naltrexone.
