View Article  Don't buy the Rice Pharm

I consider opposing this irresponsible genetic experimentation so important that not only did I post about it on March 9th, I am now alerting you again. Please send this info to any friends like yourselves, who are concerned about this kind of experimentation.

I am linking you to a blog called HSI on the Spot, which says as follows towards the end of the article - I don't want you to miss this part!

DO THIS TODAY - TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY FOR COMMENTS

"We still have a chance to stop this dangerous experiment. The USDA is still accepting public comments, and will be through March 30, but they don’t make it easy. (In fact, they make it impossible to include a direct link!) But posting your opinion is worth the 60 seconds it takes to jump through the hoops:
1. Go to http://www.regulations.gov.
2. From the drop-down list next to “Agency*,” select ‘‘Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service,’’ then click on ‘‘Submit.’’ 3. In the Docket ID column, scroll down and select APHIS–2007–0006.  Click on the left-hand link. Then you can submit your own comment, view other public comments, and view all the supporting and related materials available electronically.

Please go to their website TODAY and post your comment before it’s too late. In fact, send this information to everyone you know – if we can get more people to post comments, there’s a better chance that someone at the USDA will actually pay attention!

View Article  Alpha Lipoic Acid and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Alpha Lipoc Acid is an antioxidant with many health benefits - I have a more detailed article  on it here - it is widely used in diabetic problems, and to protect the liver.  However, perhaps its most interesting ability is to regenerate our supplies of Vitamins C and E.

Now comes some preliminary research showing it may help in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid May Benefit Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

"Alpha-lipoic acid suppresses the development of collagen-induced arthritis and protects against bone destruction in mice," Lee EY, Lee CK, et al, Rheumatology International, 2007; 27(3): 225-233. (Address: Division of Allergy and Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Asan Medical Center, 388-1 Pungnap-Dong, Songpa-Gu, Seoul, 138-736, Republic of Korea. E-mail: byoo@amc.seoul.kr ).
In a study involving mice, alpha-lipoic acid was found to attenuate the development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in a dose-dependent manner. The mice were divided into three groups. Group1 received alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) 10 mg/kg; Group2 received ALA 100 mg/kg; and Group3 received a placebo. Results found that mice treated with lipoic acid experienced a dose-dependent reduction in CIA. Furthermore, bone erosion and destructive changes were prevented with ALA administration in vivo, and formation of osteoclasts was inhibited in vitro. Levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species, and concentrations of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, and synovial NF-kappa B binding were found to be markedly higher among mice with CIA as compared to controls; after treatment with alpha-lipoic acid, these levels decreased significantly. The authors of this study conclude, "…these results indicate that alpha-lipoic acid may be a new adjunctive therapy for rheumatoid arthritis."

Convenience - or the future of the human race?  Where would we be without those handy plastics to wrap our foods in - but previous scientific studies on humans have found that phthalates, found in such materials,  are associated with poor semen quality in men and subtle changes in the reproductive organs in baby boys.

These changes are brought about by interfering with testosterone levels.  In this new study, Doctors theorized that since low testosterone is also implicated in obesity and syndrome X, there might be a connection with phthalates there, also.

And indeed - there is!

Action Alert! - Don't Lose Your Access to Compounded Medicines

Tell Congress: Don't Take Away Our Access to Compounded Medicines! If you or a loved one relies on compounded medicines - e.g., bioidentical hormones, pediatric medicines, hospice treatments, low dose naltrexone - or if you are a Doctor who prescribes compounded medicines to your patients, please read on.

A small but powerful group of senators is about to introduce legislation that would severely restrict and possibly deny your access to critical medications and create new onerous regulations for prescribers.  Act today to protect access to compounded medicines!

If this legislation passes, federal regulators, not your doctor, will decide what medicines you can take.  Do you really want to leave your customized medicine needs in the hands of bureaucrats in the government?

The so-called Safe Drug Compounding Act of 2007 would, among other things:

  • Broadly eliminate the availability of many critical, commonly compounded medications that many patients rely on, such as bioidentical hormones for women, hospice care treatments for the terminally ill and customized medicines for children.
  • Allow the federal government to determine when compounded medicines are needed - a decision that has always been and should always be made by doctors.
  • Restrict the compounded medications your doctor can prescribe even if he or she determines you need them.

If you or someone you know depends on compounded medications, act now to stop this dangerous legislation!

View Article  Water it for growth - cancer, arsenic and fluoride

As some of you may know, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma about 18 months ago - if interested, you can read my saga here:

http://www.vitaminlady.com/Articles/cancer-vitamin-lady.asp

Every time I think I have taken everything into account, something else crops up.  I cannot thank Chris Gupta enough for bringing this to my attention.  I suspect that many people, and certainly I do this, DRINK water that is purified, but COOK with water from the tap:  which means in effect that all the glasses of green tea I drink are negated by the water I dilute it with!!

Ay de mi!  Sometimes I can't make up my mind whether to stop eating, or stop reading!

Follows an excerpt of Chris's detailed report - you owe it to yourself to visit his site and read the entire article:  I have put the link below.

...Austrian and Japanese researchers both found that a concentration of 1 PPM fluoride causes disruption of the body's ability to repair its own DNA. Without this most basic cell function, cancer is promoted, and tumor growth is accelerated.

That's standard fluoride level in US city water: one part per million.

Chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Dean Burk when confronted with mountains of data, stated before Congress:

"In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer death, and causes it faster than any other chemical."

- Congressional Record 21 July 1976

ARSENIC IN MY FLUORIDE? CDC ADMITS

Trace amounts of arsenic are found in fluoride chemicals added to drinking
water supplies, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC)
website. Fluoridation chemicals - sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate,
and fluorosilicic acid (FSA) – are all derived from the manufacture of
phosphate fertilizer, reports the CDC. Trace amounts of unwanted
contaminants, such as antimony, barium, beryllium, arsenic and others, are
allowed to remain in fluoridation chemicals before flowing through
 America’s faucets.

View Article  Iron bars

Iron is still a bit of a mystery in the human body:  while too little is a problem, so is too much.  In fact, an imbalance on either side of the spectrum is a disease, anemia (IDA - iron deficiency anemia)  and hemachromatosis.

Generally, when an adult is suffering from anemia, the first suspicion is some form of occult bleeding.  However, often no such cause can be determined.

This study shows a fascinating connection between IDA, and Helicobacter Pylori, the bug which is implicated in many ulcers.  In some of these cases, where previously it had been impossible to raise the patients' iron levels by ANY means, the levels adjusted themselves after H. Pylori was eradicated.

It would be harder to imagine anything weirder and more unsettling than this.

Scientists at a company called  Ventria Bioscience have bio-engineered a strain of rice containing human genes found in  breast milk.  They present this as a disinterested (but profitable) way to control diarrhea in infants ...

However, the risks for our food chain and our health are incalculable.  What boggles the mind is that NOBODY KNOWS the exact consequences of this kind of manipulation, yet Government seems to be in accord before the ink is dry on the proposals.

I know - that tag line IS stretching it a bit, but after all, Pycnogenol comes from pine bark!

I have recommended Pycnogenol for many years for menstrual discomfort, and it has been generally extremely effective.  Now comes a study showing it can alleviate the discomfort and pain associated with endometriosis, a condition where the onset of menses produces extra tissue, which attaches outside the uterus causing inflammation and pain .  These adhesions may turn up in the abdomen and on the ovaries where it  causes great pain, and interferes with reproductive processes.

Ladies, another opportunity to mount on one of my hobby horses.  When you consider that breastfeeding:

Protects baby against disease
Increases intelligence
Decreases the likelihood of obesity
Protects YOU against breast cancer

and that FORMULAS

never have all that is contained in breast milk

why would you consider any other way of nourishing your precious baby?

Now, consider another problem that has arisen with thwarting nature's intent - never mind the possibility of toxins in the formula itself, the very bottles that you fill with it are poisoning our infants!

View Article  The Annual Trek

I will be leaving Monday for the annual Natural Foods Convention in Anaheim California.  Since I am in Illinois, it will probably be considered eccentric (to say the least) that I choose to drive:  but flying inevitably makes me ill. This is its yearly outing for my beautiful red car.

In any event, I will try to answer your e-mails while I am gone, but there will be a day or two here and there when I will be out of touch, so I beg your indulgence.  I will be back the 17th of March.

Cindy, Clay, Donna and Kayla will be taking good care of you while I am gone!

 Honk if you see me.....

Another interesting study in the long list of reasons why Vitamin D is important, pointing out yet again that we are not generally getting enough of it.

Researchers report that among the elderly study participants, of the group taking the high dose (800 IU) vitamin D supplement, only 20% of the participants  fell, versus 44% of the placebo group.

A litle time spent in the sunshine each day enjoying life could make quite a difference, it seems!

More evidence that vitamin D may cut falls amongst the elderly
